What is the most sold T-shirt size?

When I started producing T-shirts, one of the first questions I asked was: “Which T-shirt size sells the most?” I thought the answer would be simple, but after years of making shirts for brands in different markets, I learned that the answer depends on region and audience. Still, there is a clear overall trend.

The most sold T-shirt size worldwide is Medium (M) for both men and women. In the United States, Large (L) is also very common for men due to a slightly bigger average build. For women, Medium remains the top seller.

I remember the first big order we did for a U.S. client. We made way too many small sizes and almost ran out of large ones. After that, I always pay attention to size distribution when planning production.

Why is medium the most common T-shirt size?

Medium fits the largest number of people and works as a safe choice.

Medium sells the most because it covers the average build. For retail, many buyers choose medium when shopping as a gift or when unsure about fit.

  • Universal fit: Works for many body types
  • Safe gift choice: Easier to guess
  • Standard for sampling: Most samples are made in M

In my factory, most show samples are made in medium. It is the baseline for fittings and photos.

Which sizes sell the most for men?

Men’s T-shirt size distribution is slightly larger than women’s.

For men, Large (L) and Medium (M) are the top-selling sizes. In the U.S., Large is often the single most sold size, while in Europe and Asia, Medium sells slightly more.

  • Large (L): 40–45%
  • Medium (M): 35–40%
  • Extra Large (XL): 15–20%
  • Small (S): 5–10%

I have shipped thousands of T-shirts to the U.S., and Large is always the size we produce the most for male-focused brands.

Which sizes sell the most for women?

Women’s T-shirt sizing skews slightly smaller.

For women, Medium is usually the best-selling size, followed by Small. Large sizes sell well too, but Small and Medium dominate.

  • Medium (M): 40–45%
  • Small (S): 30–35%
  • Large (L): 15–20%
  • Extra Large (XL): 5–10%

I once worked with a women’s activewear brand, and 70% of their orders were split between small and medium sizes.

How do regional differences affect best-selling sizes?

Geography changes everything.

In North America, larger sizes (L, XL) are more common. In Europe, Medium is dominant. In Asia, Medium and Small sizes sell more because the average build is smaller.

  • North America: L > M > XL > S
  • Europe: M > L > S > XL
  • Asia: M > S > L > XL

I’ve learned to adjust our production based on the destination market. It avoids overstock of sizes that won’t move.

Does style affect size popularity?

Yes, style plays a big role.

Oversized streetwear sells more in L and XL because people prefer a loose fit. Slim-fit or basic T-shirts often sell more Medium and Small sizes.

  • Oversized style: More buyers choose one size up
  • Slim-fit: Buyers stick to their usual size
  • Unisex T-shirts: Many women order one size down

For our oversized hoodies and T-shirts, we always prepare more large and extra-large than usual.

How do brands plan size ratios for orders?

Factories use past sales data and standard ratios.

Brands use size ratios like 1:2:2:1 (S:M:L:XL) for mixed-size runs. They adjust based on their customer base.

Example for 100 pieces:

  • 15 Small
  • 35 Medium
  • 35 Large
  • 15 Extra Large

I always ask new clients about their expected customer base before confirming the ratio.

Conclusion

Medium is the most sold T-shirt size worldwide, with Large also very strong in men’s sizes—especially in the U.S. Retailers adjust their size mix based on target audience and region, but Medium remains the universal starting point.
