How many GSM is a good quality hoodie?

When I work with new brands, one of the first things they ask me is: How heavy should the fabric be for a good quality hoodie?
The weight of the fabric is measured in GSM (grams per square meter). This number decides how thick, soft, and durable the hoodie feels.

A good quality hoodie usually uses fabric between 320 and 500 GSM. Basic hoodies start around 280–320 GSM, midweight hoodies are 350–400 GSM, and premium high-quality hoodies are 400–500 GSM or more.

I remember a client who changed from a 300 GSM blend to a 450 GSM 100% cotton French terry. The fit became structured, the fabric felt heavy, and their customers instantly noticed the difference.

What is GSM in hoodies?

GSM stands for grams per square meter.

It tells you the weight of the fabric. The higher the GSM, the thicker and heavier the hoodie will be.

Why GSM matters

  • Low GSM: Lightweight, cheaper, less warm
  • High GSM: Heavier, warmer, more structured
  • Premium brands use higher GSM for quality and durability

What GSM is used for basic hoodies?

Basic hoodies sold in fast fashion stores use lighter fabrics.

Basic hoodies are usually 280–320 GSM.

Characteristics

  • Thin and easy to wear in mild weather
  • Often made from cotton-poly blends
  • Less durable and may lose shape faster

What GSM is good for everyday midweight hoodies?

Many good hoodies are made from midweight fabric.

Midweight hoodies are usually 350–400 GSM.

Midweight benefits

  • Balanced: not too heavy, not too light
  • Good for daily casual wear
  • Often made from 100% cotton or cotton blends

This is a popular choice for brands that want both quality and reasonable price.

What GSM is best for a high-quality or luxury hoodie?

High-end hoodies are heavy.

Premium hoodies are 400–500 GSM. Luxury streetwear often uses 450–500 GSM for a structured oversized look.

High GSM features

  • Dense and solid feel
  • Holds its shape after washing
  • Comfortable and warm
  • Perfect for embroidery, puff print, or garment dyeing

In my factory, most luxury brands request 420–480 GSM French terry or brushed cotton fleece.

GSM comparison table

Hoodie Type GSM Range Fabric Feel
Basic hoodie 280–320 Light and thin
Midweight hoodie 350–400 Balanced and versatile
Premium hoodie 400–500 Heavy, structured, durable

Does GSM alone decide hoodie quality?

Not completely.

GSM is important, but the quality also depends on cotton type, stitching, trims, and finishing.

A high GSM fabric made with poor quality yarn can still feel rough or stiff. That is why brands focus on both fabric and workmanship.
You can also check the American Apparel & Footwear Association for additional quality standards.

Conclusion

A good quality hoodie usually has a fabric weight between 350 and 500 GSM.
For premium and luxury hoodies, aim for 400–500 GSM using 100% cotton French terry or fleece.
