What’s the difference between a long sleeve and a sweatshirt?

Many people confuse long sleeve T-shirts with sweatshirts. At first glance, both have long sleeves, but they are very different in weight, purpose, and fabric. Knowing the difference helps you choose the right garment for comfort and style.

A long sleeve is usually a lightweight T-shirt made from thin jersey fabric, while a sweatshirt is heavier, made from thicker fleece or French terry, and designed for warmth. Sweatshirts also often have ribbed cuffs and hems, which long sleeves usually do not.

I still remember a client’s first order. They asked for 200 “long sleeves” but actually meant sweatshirts. The samples we sent showed them the big difference between the two.

What is a long sleeve shirt?

A long sleeve shirt is basically a T-shirt with full-length sleeves.

A long sleeve shirt is made from the same material as a short-sleeve T-shirt—lightweight jersey cotton or a cotton blend. It’s thin, soft, and perfect for layering or wearing in mild weather.

Features of a long sleeve shirt

  • Made from lightweight jersey
  • Slim and soft
  • Breathable and not very warm
  • Can be worn as a base layer

I often wear long sleeve shirts when I need just a little more coverage than a short-sleeve T-shirt but not as much warmth as a sweatshirt. You can see more examples on Fibre2Fashion.

What is a sweatshirt?

A sweatshirt is thicker, warmer, and made from different fabric.

A sweatshirt is made from medium- to heavyweight knit fabric like fleece or French terry. It is soft on the inside and has ribbed cuffs, neckline, and hem. Sweatshirts are designed for cooler weather.

Features of a sweatshirt

  • Thick and warm
  • Usually has ribbed cuffs and waistband
  • Made from fleece or French terry
  • Often worn as outerwear or mid-layer

When I wear a sweatshirt, I feel like I’m wrapped in a soft blanket. That’s why it’s a go-to choice in autumn and winter. See more sweatshirt styles at Nike or Adidas.

How are the fabrics different?

Fabric weight and structure are the biggest differences between the two.

Long sleeve shirts use jersey fabric, which is thin and smooth. Sweatshirts use heavier knit fabrics, often brushed inside for softness and warmth.

Quick comparison

Feature Long Sleeve Shirt Sweatshirt
Fabric weight Light (jersey) Heavy (fleece/terry)
Warmth Low High
Ribbed cuffs Rare Common
Typical use Mild weather or layering Cooler weather

The thicker fabric of a sweatshirt traps more heat and feels structured, while a long sleeve T-shirt drapes lightly on the body.

Are they used for the same purpose?

No. They are made for different seasons and purposes.

Long sleeve shirts are for mild temperatures, layering, or indoor wear. Sweatshirts are for warmth, casual fashion, and sportswear in cooler conditions.

If you only need light coverage, a long sleeve is fine. If you need warmth, structure, and a cozy feel, a sweatshirt is the better choice.

Conclusion

A long sleeve shirt is thin and lightweight like a T-shirt, while a sweatshirt is thicker, warmer, and made from fleece or French terry with ribbed details, perfect for cold weather.
